“How much detail will it show?” is one of the most useful questions to ask before ordering a terrain model. The answer depends on several linked choices rather than a single resolution number.
Source data
The model can only reproduce features present in suitable source data. Elevation data describes the shape of the ground. Buildings, roads, trees and other surface features may come from different datasets and are not automatically part of every terrain model.
Area and physical size
Area and model size work together. Put a large region into a small model and every kilometre occupies less physical space. Choose a tighter crop or a larger model and local features become easier to distinguish. This is why an urban model can show individual houses when it covers a focused area at an appropriate scale, while a country model is designed to show broad relief.
Horizontal and vertical scale
Horizontal scale determines how wide features are. Vertical scale determines how strongly height changes appear. In mountainous terrain, natural relief is often clear. In lowland areas, carefully judged vertical emphasis may make slopes easier to read, but excessive exaggeration can distort the landscape.
Printing limits and finishing
Very fine digital features can disappear if they are narrower than a printable line or too shallow to survive finishing. Layer height, nozzle size, material and print orientation affect the surface. A well-designed model simplifies features that would otherwise become fragile or visually noisy.
Colour and lighting
Detail is also visual. A single-colour model relies on light and shadow, which often presents relief cleanly. Contrasting routes, labels or buildings can draw attention to selected information, but too many additions can make the terrain harder to read.
Design around the important feature
Tell the maker what must be visible: a summit ridge, a group of houses, a route, a river or a development boundary. The crop, size and feature treatment can then be planned around that priority.
