Where physical models are strongest

A physical model gives everyone the same view at the same time. It is easy to point, trace a route and compare slopes without operating software. A physical model has a fixed area, scale and set of visible features. Changing the design may require a new component or reprint. A digital map is flexible, but it can be harder for a mixed audience to navigate, and a single screen may restrict group discussion.

Use both for better decisions

Many projects benefit from a hybrid approach. Use the physical model to establish shared spatial understanding, then use digital mapping for detailed queries and changing layers. Notes or removable markers on the model can connect the discussion to drawings and GIS outputs.
